Our Stories

Talking about a Revololution

MADE BY HAND

As part of Fashion Revolution week, we wanted to share some of the stories about our artisan partners, so that you too can appreciate the extraordinary beauty of the craftsmanship that goes into all of our hand-loomed collections. After all, hand crafted is at the heart of the slow fashion movement and everything that Cloth & Co. stands for.

When we founded Cloth & Co. it was always about our artisan partners, we connected with them so that we knew how they work and they could understand how we work, it's about supporting each other; the relationships we have nurtured are so important to us, in fact our business would have no meaning if it wasn’t for these relationships which is why we want to share this with you.

Our beautiful linen scarves are produced by our partner weaving workshop in Nepal, Gabriella is the founder of @gchandmade, where her Italian origins combined with the traditional weaving techniques of skilled weavers brings us some of the most beautiful handcrafted pieces that have become a signature in our collections.

Gabriella started with the vision to support women from two villages in Kathmandu Valley, Kirtipur and Siddhipur with a source of income from the spinning the fibres with the traditional wooden charka. This work supports the women economically and preserves the traditional hand spinning skills common among Nepali women.
Gabriella has worked tirelessly to build a sustainable business. Her meaningful approach focuses on providing local people with a stable income. She creates a sense of purpose and community and ensures valuable, traditional livelihoods do not disappear.

Each of our signature linen scarves are woven, dyed and finished entirely by hand, creating a beautiful handcrafted, timeless piece that carries a unique story.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Many of the people we work with are women, women who have been brave enough to break away from the oppressive and restrictive way of life they have endured for generations and learn new skills that will lead to a livelihood and consistent wages, giving her dignity and the ability to help support her family.

Our luxurious organic cotton towels are woven by hand by a community of women weavers in Southern India… a Fair Trade producer owned business that was established in 1987 to provide training and regular work for the local women in the village. This was one of the first groups that Cloth & Co. worked with and we are so proud of the beautiful hand loomed towels they produce for us.

There is something very special about the women in this community and we love visiting them as much as they love to see us. It’s so important to have these relationships and for us to take the time to spend with them and show our appreciation of what goes into every single piece.

We have been selling their beautiful towels for nearly 6 years and everyone who has purchased them say they can feel the difference, we like to think that it is all the love that goes into their work.

100% ORGANIC

Our organic cotton jersey is not handcrafted but it is made by individuals and we couldn't be more grateful for the wonderful work of the people who make our clothes; and after all with everyone in isolation and working from home, there’s been no better time to be wearing comfortable, easy to care for loungewear. Our organic cotton jersey essentials are a staple for Cloth & Co. and a sustainable, ethically made option for the everyday basic.

We produce in a small scale stitching unit in Southern India, the cotton is grown on organic farms which is supporting biodiversity and regenerative agriculture.
One of our greatest motivators is the people we work with; this inspires us to change the way we do things and make the world a better place. We hope that more and more people will find out how beautiful, pure organic cotton is to wear and that it is also good for the farmers and the planet!

 BE THE CHANGE

Fashion Revolution Week is a reminder of the the tragedy that happened seven years ago today, the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed and took the lives of more than 1,100 people and injured another 2,500. Most of the victims were young women and they were making clothes for some of the biggest fashion brands in the world.

For us this week is also a celebration for the hard working people who make our clothes for us, it is a reminder that each of us is responsible for making sure that the vulnerable are not exposed to the dangers inflicted through greed and mass production.

We see all of the people we work with in Nepal & India as well as here in Australia as a truly significant part of our business, we actively look to better ways to do what we do, we ask questions and we keep our communication channels open so that together we can enjoy what we do and live life with passion, we want everyone involved with Cloth & Co. to thrive!

Together we hope we can create a global fashion industry that conserves and restores the environment and values people over growth and profit!
Join the revolution and help us "be the change we wish to see in the world" - Mahatma Gandhi.
